Carbon footprint is the measure of total green house gases emitted by an individual. The result of this calculation will tell you what your equivalent number of earth you are using during a specific period of time (Wiktionary, 2009).
I visited one of the environmental awareness which is footprint.wwf.org.uk and I answered the questions which is been asked by the web site about the type of carbon emission device that I’m using and the duration.
My result was 2.94 planets. Comparing my Carbon footprint with my classmate, I found that I have the highest Earth equivalent among the other. In contrast, the lowest result was for Abdulla Al-Jabir and he got 2.03 planets. The second lowest result was for Faris when he got 2.18 planets. Whereas the average foot prints for Mohamed and Mubarak were 2.475 planets (Footprint, 2009).
Each person in UAE produces 32.28 tons of CO2. Comparing UAE with other country in the gulf region, it has the third highest CO2 emitted per person. Whereas the highest amount of CO2 emitted per person is 64.14 tons in Qatar followed by 38.26 tons Kuwait. In addition, in china each person produces 3.7 tons .This because each Chinese can’t have individual car (Bleja, 2009).
What makes people getting highest footprint is because their life style. Many people use individual instead of public transportation like buses. Moreover, consuming electricity for long time and not using more efficient electrical devices in the house another factor for increasing the carbon emission. Therefore, using double glazing, draught proofing, using more efficient electric devises and encouraging people to travel by the public transportations such as buses will be helpful in reducing the carbon emission (Leo, 2006).
